Doc
Key quotes from Doc:
- “It was your expression, ja, it is always the expression that is important, without the expression the human being is just a lump of meat” I think that this quote is important because it shows how Doc thinks about the world and the people in it. He sees people on a deeper level than just their skin colour. For example when he first talks to Peekay he immediately notices that he has had a hard life and seems to know what to do to make Peekay laugh.
- “You must put your hands like so, at once we will stand on one leg and say, no matter what has happened bad, today I am finished being sad, absoloodle.” This quote is important because it is the first thing in the book that has made Peekay act silly, or act like he is a 5 or 6 year old.
Doc’s Character attributes:
Doc is a very kind person who sees things from a childish point of view. We see this when Doc first enters the book by taking a picture of Peekay standing on a rock, Peekay notices this, “His eyes were an intense blue and seemed too young for his face”. When Peekay notices this he is seeing the look of someone who has not lost their childlike innocence and sees the world without any racist views or judgment.
Doc is very artistic and has a very imaginative mind. He doesn’t conform to the social norms or styles, his hair is an example of this, it’s long, white, and opposes that of the normal men hairstyle. Doc is imaginative because he sees his cactus as a real person, and maybe he thinks of all things like that, “Peekay, this is Euphorbia Grandicornis, a very shy cactus and very hard to find in these parts.”
Background details about Doc:
We know doc is a professor and also that he is German or has German roots because of his name: Professor Von Vollensteen
